Julius Sumner Miller — Bill Nye with None of the Flash

If you attended public school–like your humble author, you probably remember the common occurrence of educational films being popped into the VCR in lieu of an actual lesson.  It was the ultimate way for teachers to phone it in, and they took advantage as often as possible.

Occasionally, you’d get lucky and watch Reading Rainbow or on really special occasions, The Magic School Bus–but typically it was outdated crap that had probably been in the school library since the Truman administration.  Enter Julius Sumner Miller–a pioneer in the genre of classroom science films.

I recently read that he had died and I was immediately reminded of his videos, with their ominous introductory music and JSM’s classic catchphrase, “I’m Julius Sumner Miller, and physics is my business!”.

Chances are, you watched these videos too and remember catching up on sleep when the lights went down in science class.

Here’s to Julius Sumner Miller, an icon of the edutainment genre!
