RIP: Tommy Morrison (AKA: Tommy “The Machine” Gunn)
Former professional boxer Tommy Morrison died today at the age of 44, according to reports.
In his prime, he was a hulking heavyweight who ended his career at 49-3-1, including a 1993 WBO title win over George Foreman. However, his life as a fighter was cut short when he was diagnosed with HIV in 1996, after eight years in the fight game.
I’m writing about Morrison on Overdue Review not because I’m a boxing nut but because of his ties to Hollywood. To film buffs, he will always be remembered as Tommy “The Machine” Gunn from Rocky V. In that film, Morrison played the up-and-coming apprentice of Sly Stallone’s legendary Rocky Balboa. In the film, Gunn ends up turning into an egotistical jerk and fighting his mentor in the ring. Needless to say, the Italian Stallion came out on top in the bout.
His role in Rocky wasn’t Morrison’s only connection with the movie business, though. His real in-ring nickname, “The Duke”, was given to him because he was the grandnephew of John Wayne.
RIP: Tommy Morrison, you put some hustle behind the muscle.
